REACH FOR THE SKY FOUNDATION
Join the fight to cure DIPG and other childhood brain cancers
WHO WE ARE
In loving memory and honor of their 4-year-old daughter, Skylar Marie, David and Carrie Meckes established the Reach for the Sky Foundation to End Childhood Brain Cancers, Inc. on May 17, 2020 (also known as DIPG Awareness Day). Skylar was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive brain cancer called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) on October 2, 2019. Without any known cures or successful treatment options available, she courageously fought a difficult battle against DIPG for 7 months. On May 4, 2020, Skylar passed away in the comfort of her own home in the arms of her mother and father, surrounded by her three big sisters.
The Reach For The Sky Foundation is driven to find a cure for DIPG and other childhood brain cancers. Currently, brain cancer kills more children than any other disease. Although the five-year survival rate has increased for some childhood brain cancers, the rate remains the same at less than 1% for DIPG. Each day roughly one child is diagnosed with DIPG and another dies in the US. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 6-9 months. Because the tumor is located in the brain stem and interferes with essential bodily functions, like the ability to walk, talk, swallow, and eventually breathe, the last few months of each child’s life is typically met with agonizing challenges.
The only way to defeat this terrible, life-threatening disease is through scientific clinical research and medical advances. Sadly, the standard of care for DIPG has not changed in 50+ years and government funding is less than 0.0005% of the total cancer research funding available. In our efforts to promote change, Reach For The Sky Foundation will raise awareness and provide funding for research to create new effective treatments for DIPG and other childhood brain cancers.
Please join us in our mission to share Skylar's story, increase funding for research, and provide help to families going through this unfathomable journey that no one should have to experience. Together, we have the ability to take action and move towards a cure for DIPG and other pediatric brain cancers.
Reach For The Sky Foundation to End Childhood Brain Cancers, Inc. is no longer active as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
SKYLAR MARIE MECKES
Our hero and DIPG angel
Vivacious, brave, strong, courageous, smart, funny, sassy-sweet, and tender-hearted, Sky gave THE best snuggles and “hugs around the neck,” loved learning, arts and crafts, puzzles and books. She played games, rode her tricycle and bike, sang, danced, swam, and played PAW Patrol. The most important part of her life was spending time with her family, whether Sky was at home for a movie night and dance party, camping in the great outdoors, playing at the beach, or going to Disney World.
Skylar touched the lives of so many in ways that will remain with us forever, and leave us smiling through our tears. We will always remember the sound of her voice and laughter, and the sparkle of her baby blue eyes as she grinned.
